Maternity, Adoption and Parental Leave

Maternity, adoption and parental leave is available to public servants who are becoming parents. Up to 12 months leave is available and is generally unpaid leave. Eligible employees are entitled to 14 weeks paid maternity, adoption or other parent leave, or to one week's paid other parent leave if they are not receiving maternity or adoption leave. Maternity, adoption and other parent leave can be taken at full or half pay.

A staff member who has been granted maternity, adoption or other parent leave may request to extend the period of unpaid leave for a further 12 months and may request to return to work, following the leave, on a part-time basis until the child reaches school age.

A staff member may also elect to take available recreation leave at half pay in conjunction with maternity, adoption or other parent leave.

Employees not covered by the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment) Reviewed Award 2006 are covered by other industrial instruments.

You can use HR eXpert to work out if you are entitled to paid maternity leave and how you can take your paid and unpaid maternity leave.
