Utilising Cultural Diversity as a Business Advantage
The NSW public sector Workforce Strategy, developed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, has as one of its strategic directions to create a workforce that reflects, values and draws on the diversity of the people of NSW.
Both private and public sector organisations are working to produce innovation (seeking a business advantage in the private sector) and optimal service provision by recognising the value of cultural diversity in their workforce. The advantages of having a workforce that reflects the demographics of its client base are well recognised. For example, a diverse workforce is more likely to be able to identify and deliver an optimal provision of services that are inclusive of, and responsive to the needs of a diverse NSW community.
We also need to look at the previously untapped labour markets. With organisations facing skills shortages globally, utilising the skills of culturally diverse people (including overseas trained staff) is a natural consideration in any workforce plan.
Strategies to support cultural diversity include:
- providing information on recognition and/or assessment of overseas qualifications
- making use of the Community Language Allowance Scheme to improve customer service
- provide access to flexible working conditions to staff who observe religious duties
- making use of the Translation Services via the NSW Community Relations Commission to improve customer service.
The Community Relations Commission is the leading government agency supporting multicultural communities in NSW. It builds strong relationships with ethnic community groups and develops and fosters extensive networks throughout various communities through its programs and services. As such, the CRC is positioned to provide comprehensive advice to government on multicultural issues.
This agency has responsibility for promoting community harmony, participation and access to services in order that the contribution of cultural diversity to NSW is celebrated and recognised as an important social and economic resource.
The Community Relations Commission has a range of relevant services including Community Development Grants, EmailLink (email distribution services to specific target audiences) and video conferencing to facilitate interpreting and consultation with remote areas.
