Overseas Qualifications

Job advertisements may require applicants to be registered, licensed, hold a trade certificate, or be a member of a professional association. Applicants will need to get formal recognition of qualifications before applying for these jobs. For more information on assessment of overseas qualifications see Circular 2007-22 Assessment of Overseas Qualifications.

For further information in NSW, you can contact the following:

If selected as the preferred candidate for a position, the selection committee will ask to see original certificates or certified (by the institution) academic transcripts of qualifications.

The cost of producing this documentation is to be met by the applicant. The selection committee may also seek verification of qualifications from the issuing institution. If it is not possible to get proof of qualifications provide a statutory declaration with details of qualifications.

Following employment any statement on an application that is found to be deliberately misleading could result in dismissal and/or prosecution.

In Australia no single authority assesses or recognises all overseas qualifications. Many professional, government and other organisations are involved, depending on the type of qualification or occupation and whether the assessment is for the purpose of migration or employment in a particular State or Territory of Australia.

Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI) can provide information about assessment of occupational qualifications, skills or experience gained overseas and state-specific licensing and registration requirements to work in Australia.

Australian Education International (AEI), through the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR), provides official information and advice on the comparability of overseas qualifications with Australian qualifications. This aims to help overseas qualified people work and study in Australia. Phone: 1300 363 079.
