Advice to Aboriginal Job Applicants

Advice to Aboriginal job applicants

This page gives information for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders who are interested in applying for NSW Government jobs. The general pages on Recruitment and selection provide essential information to help in preparing your application.

Further information is available on the MIOB website.

Should I identify as Aboriginal when I apply?

You are encouraged to consider stating your Aboriginality in your application. This is especially important if you are applying for a position which has been “identified” for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The NSW Anti-Discrimination Board outlines the definition of an Aboriginal person by the Federal Government.

Many public sector agencies have Aboriginal employment and development plans and are keen to encourage applications form Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

What can I do if I feel I have been discriminated against?

If you believe you have not been treated fairly when applying for a job, the Aboriginal Outreach Unit of the Anti-Discrimination Board phone 9268 5555 can assist you. The Unit's three Aboriginal staff provide a range of services including conciliation of complaints, education programs on rights under the Anti-Discrimination Act and telephone advice on what to do if you think you have been treated unfairly.
